In one of the largest operations against alleged illegal coal mining networks in Jharkhand, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at more than 30 locations across Dhanbad and uncovered assets worth over ₹600 crore. The operation was carried out by the ED's Ranchi Zonal Office as part of a money laundering investigation linked to illegal mining, extortion, and levy collection.The Dhanbad Coal Mafia Crackdown targeted several coal traders, outsourcing contractors, and their associates operating in Saraydhela, Katras, Jharia, and Bank More areas of Dhanbad.What Was Recovered During the ED Raids?According to officials, the ED raids Dhanbad led to the recovery of ownership documents related to more than 200 immovable properties, including residential plots, commercial complexes, and mining-related assets. Investigators estimate the total value of these properties at ₹500-600 crore.The agency also froze mutual fund investments worth approximately ₹160 crore and seized over ₹1.02 crore in unaccounted cash. The district has long faced allegations of illegal mining and organised coal syndicates operating around BCCL mines.After the nationalisation of BCCL in the 1970s, the region became associated with coal mafia activity and gang rivalries. Investigators believe that over the years, traditional criminal networks evolved into organised business and contractor-based structures involved in coal theft and financial misconduct.What Is the Objective of the Crackdown?Officials said the latest Dhanbad Coal Mafia Crackdown is part of the Union Home Ministry's reported zero-tolerance policy against illegal mining and coal theft.
