The Education Ministry has introduced a 6-Month Certificate Course for BEd Teachers working as primary school teachers. The programme is being offered through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) as a Bridge Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE). It is designed to strengthen the teaching skills of eligible in-service BEd qualified primary teachers. The 6-month certificate course was created to address the gap between B.Ed. training and the specific teaching needs of children at the primary level. The programme focuses on child development, classroom teaching, assessment and age-appropriate learning methods.Key HighlightsThe course is meant for eligible in-service primary teachers with a B.Ed. qualification.NIOS will deliver the programme through Open and Distance Learning (ODL).The course includes academic study and school-based experience. The programme focuses on child-centred and inclusive teaching practices. Why Was the Course Started? The primary teacher training course was introduced because teaching young children requires specific knowledge and classroom skills. A B.Ed. qualification provides teacher education, but the bridge programme is designed to develop competencies specifically connected with primary-stage education. The NIOS programme follows the framework connected with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and directions arising from the Supreme Court's April 8, 2024 judgment. The official NIOS programme states that the course is intended for in-service primary teachers appointed with a B.Ed. qualification under the relevant NCTE framework.“The Six-Month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education is designed to enhance the teaching skills of in-service educators.”The objective is to help teachers understand how primary-school children learn and how teaching methods can be adapted to their developmental needs. What Will Teachers Study? The Education Ministry certificate course covers subjects including child development and educational psychology, curriculum and assessment, language teaching, mathematics pedagogy and understanding the world around us.Teachers will also complete school experience, which connects their academic learning with classroom practice. The programme includes assignments, project work, examinations and school-based practicum. The course carries a total of 20 credits and includes seven components, including school experience. The official course structure lists a total of 500 marks across internal assessment and examinations. How Will the Course Be Conducted? The BEd teacher course 2026 is delivered through Open and Distance Learning. It uses contact programmes, digital learning materials and other online resources, allowing working teachers to continue their professional responsibilities while completing the course. The programme also focuses on inclusive education. Teachers are expected to learn how to address differences among children related to language, gender, disability and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.Who Is Eligible? The certificate course for primary teachers is specifically linked to eligible in-service teachers appointed with B.Ed. qualifications under the applicable NCTE framework. NIOS currently states that the standard eligibility period covers appointments made from June 28, 2018, to August 11, 2023, subject to the applicable conditions. The course is intended to help eligible teachers retain their existing primary teaching appointments. NIOS also states that the bridge certificate is not valid for seeking new primary-teacher employment. The teacher training programme India initiative therefore focuses on improving primary-stage teaching skills while providing a structured pathway for eligible working teachers to meet the required professional framework. Also Read :Bihar Vidya Saathi App Launched by CM Samrat Choudhary, to Benefit 3 Lakh Students
