Tension prevailed at Hyderabad’s Tank Bund on September 21, 2026, after members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) protested against restrictions on Ganesh idol immersion along the Hussain Sagar lakefront. Protesters attempted to remove barricades installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad City Police.The Hyderabad Ganesh Immersion Row began around 11 am when a large group of Samithi members reached Tank Bund and objected to the barricading and notices restricting immersion from the upper Tank Bund stretch. The protesters raised slogans and attempted to dismantle iron barricades fixed near the lake railing.Police personnel deployed at the location intervened and took several protesters into preventive custody. Reports said 36 members were detained and taken to Gandhi Nagar police station for several hours. A police officer also said a case was registered under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.Why Are Ganesh Immersions Restricted at Tank Bund?The dispute concerns a long-running issue surrounding Hussain Sagar Ganesh immersion and environmental regulations.Authorities have placed banners at Tank Bund stating that idol immersion is not permitted along the restricted stretch and have advised devotees to use designated immersion points. The restrictions are linked to earlier Telangana High Court directions concerning the immersion of Ganesh idols, particularly those made from Plaster of Paris (PoP).'In September 2021, the Telangana High Court directed authorities not to permit PoP Ganesh idols to be immersed in Hussain Sagar and other lakes. General secretary Ravinuthala Shashidhar said the organisation had made representations to officials regarding facilities and immersion arrangements.The authorities, meanwhile, have directed devotees towards designated locations and have made arrangements involving cranes at alternative immersion points.When Will the Ganesh Immersion Take Place?The Ganesh festival celebrations began on September 14, 2026, and the major immersion procession is scheduled for September 25. Thousands of idols from Hyderabad, Secunderabad and surrounding areas are expected to be brought for immersion.The Ganesh idol immersion restrictions have therefore become a major issue ahead of the final immersion day, with organisers seeking access to Tank Bund while authorities continue to enforce restrictions linked to environmental and court directions.The Hyderabad Ganesh festival protest has also received political attention. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the detention of protesters and called for arrangements that would allow Ganesh immersion.The situation remains closely watched ahead of September 25, when Hyderabad’s main Ganesh immersion procession is expected to take place.
