A formal inquiry has been ordered at a government hospital in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after a video surfaced showing a doctor's driver allegedly examining patients and prescribing medicines inside an outpatient department (OPD) room. The incident reportedly took place at Kanshiram Hospital, also known as Kanshi Ram Combined Hospital and Trauma Centre, near Rama Devi Chauraha in Kanpur. The man seen in the video has been identified by hospital authorities as Dev, who works as the personal driver of the hospital's Emergency Medical Officer (EMO), Dr. Ramkesh. What happened inside the hospital? The video surfaced on social media on September 16, 2026. It allegedly shows Dev sitting inside an OPD room and speaking with patients about their health problems.According to reports, he was also seen writing medicines on prescription slips and advising some patients to purchase medicines from outside pharmacies when the required medicines were reportedly unavailable at the hospital. The incident reportedly happened when Dr. Ramkesh was away from the hospital to attend a court hearing, where he was scheduled to give evidence. The video led to questions about whether an unauthorised person was allowed to examine patients and provide medical advice inside a government hospital. What action has the hospital taken?Following the video becoming public, authorities removed Dev from the hospital.Chief Medical Officer Haridatt Nemi ordered a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident. The committee is headed by Chief Medical Superintendent Piyush Mishra and has been asked to submit its findings within three days. The inquiry will examine whether Dev had previously examined patients, prescribed medicines or performed similar activities at the hospital.A written police complaint was also lodged against the driver at Chakeri police station. What did the doctor say?An explanation was sought from Dr. Ramkesh regarding the incident and the presence of his driver in the OPD room.Dr. Ramkesh reportedly said that Dev was only helping an acquaintance and denied that the driver was officially treating patients.“A three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the matter, and an explanation has also been sought from the concerned doctor,” officials said, according to reports. The Kanpur hospital probe will now determine what exactly happened inside the OPD, whether patients were actually examined or prescribed medicines by the driver, and whether any hospital rules were violated. The case has also raised concerns about Kanpur hospital medical negligence and the supervision of patients when authorised doctors are away from their duty areas.
