In a major step towards promoting women's education and empowerment, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Yojana. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Under the scheme, around 50,000 meritorious undergraduate girl students across the state will receive free scooters in the first year.Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay said the scheme aims to make commuting easier and safer for female students while encouraging more girls to pursue higher education. To receive the benefit, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:Must be a female student enrolled in an undergraduate course in Uttar Pradesh.Must belong to the top 5% of students in her institution based on the 2025–26 academic session results.Annual family income should not exceed ₹12 lakh.The applicant should possess a valid driving licence before receiving the scooter.Students studying in government colleges, private universities, aided institutions, and self-financed colleges are eligible.The government has also announced special provisions for daughters of martyrs, girls from destitute families, and students with disabilities.
