A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 faced a serious takeoff incident at Munich Airport, Germany, on August 15, 2026. Flight VN34 was flying from Munich to Hanoi with 271 passengers and 16 crew members on board. The aircraft departed at around 1:45 pm local time.During the takeoff roll, the aircraft's acceleration reportedly stopped increasing for about two seconds. It then accelerated again and reached the required decision speed, known as V1. However, its speed reportedly dropped a second time.Only 91 Metres of Runway RemainedWhen the second speed drop occurred, the pilots determined that there was not enough runway remaining to safely stop the aircraft. They continued the takeoff and increased engine power to maximum thrust.The Vietnam Airlines Flight eventually became airborne with only about 91 metres of runway left. Videos circulating online appeared to show the Boeing 787 using almost the entire runway before taking off.The incident has been described as a dramatic takeoff and has raised questions about flight safety procedures and the possible cause of the unusual speed loss.Aircraft Returns to Munich After Mid-Air ScareShortly after departure, the crew received warnings suggesting a possible tail strike and abnormal tyre pressure. The pilots informed air traffic control and decided to return to Munich Airport.The aircraft remained in the air for nearly two hours at an altitude of around 9,000 feet. During this period, the crew reportedly dumped fuel to reduce the aircraft's landing weight.The Boeing 787-9 later landed safely at Munich Airport. However, inspections found a tail strike and four burst tyres. Smoke was also reportedly visible around the landing gear during the landing.Investigation UnderwayAll 287 people on board were reported safe, and no passenger or crew injuries were reported.Vietnam Airlines said the aircraft experienced a technical issue and that the crew followed established safety procedures. Aviation authorities in Germany and Vietnam are investigating the Vietnam Airlines mid-air scare and the events during the takeoff roll.Investigators are examining why the aircraft's speed fell twice and whether a technical malfunction contributed to the runway takeoff incident.
