Sunburn happens when your skin is over-exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. This can result in hot, red skin that feels tender and eventually peels. In the long term, repeated sunburns can result in wrinkled skin, dark spots, and even skin cancer.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to protect yourself from this sort of sun damage without simply staying inside. Read on to find out how to prevent sunburn while you're out and about this summer!

Always Apply Sunscreen Before You Go Out 

Applying sunscreen is the key to preventing sunburn and skin damage. Every bottle of sunscreen will display its sun protection factor (commonly known as SPF.) This tells you how effective the sunscreen is at protecting you from ultraviolent burning rays (or UVBs.)

You should apply sunscreen to any area of your skin that is going to be exposed during the day. To make this easy to remember, try to incorporate it into your morning routine. For example, if you always put sunscreen on after brushing your teeth you won't forget about it!

No matter your skin tone, for sunscreen's skin protection to work, you should wear at least SPF 30. If you have fair skin, a history of skin cancer, or are a child then it's better to go for SPF 45 or 50. This is also a good idea if you are planning to spend a prolonged period of time out in the sun.

Children over the age of 6 months and people with sensitive skin should also wear sunscreen. There are plenty of sunscreens that cater to delicate skin types. If you have a baby under the age of 6 months then you should always keep them out of direct sunlight.

Top Your Sunscreen Up Throughout the Day

In order to stay safe throughout the day, you need to top up your sunscreen regularly.

You should apply your sunscreen at least half an hour before you go out. If you are going to put make-up on then you should put your sunscreen on first followed by your make-up.

You should reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours. Moisture can remove sunscreen, even if the bottle says that it is waterproof. So if your skin gets wet you should reapply your sunscreen as soon as you have dried off.

Make sure that you apply your sunscreen generously to any exposed skin. This includes covering your face, ears, lips, backs of your hands, and your feet.

Avoid Spending Too Long Outside in the Middle of the Day

Sunscreen is great but it can only give you sun protection for so long, which is why you need to reapply it. However, if you are exposed to very strong UVB rays for a prolonged period of time, your sunscreen may not be able to protect against these. 

Because of this, it is a good idea to avoid direct sunlight between 10 am and 3 pm. This is when the sun's UVB rays are at their strongest, which means you run the greatest risk of getting sunburnt or sun-damaged.

If you do want to stay outdoors, make sure you are under a shade of some sort. This might be a thick beach umbrella or the natural shade of trees. This will help to protect you from the sun.

Wearing Clothing That Covers Your Skin 

Your clothing can also help to protect you from getting sunburnt so covering up can help. Of course, if it is very warm in the summer you won't want to wear thick layers. 

Instead, opt for lightweight long-sleeves and trousers in cotton or linen fabrics. These are airy enough to keep you cool without exposing your skin to the sun. 

It is also a good idea to wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap with a neck protector. This will stop your scalp and neck from getting burnt. They can also help to stop you from getting heatstroke if you are out in the heat for a long time.

Look for Clothing That Provides UV Protection

If you are going to spend long periods of time in direct sunlight then you might want to invest in clothing with built-in UV protection. You shouldn't use this instead of sunscreen but combined they provide powerful protection. 

This can be helpful if you are going swimming a lot, for example. You can get swimming T-shirts with UV protection to keep you safe while you are in the water. Or you might want to invest in a hat with UV protection for added security throughout the day.

Kids UPF clothing is also a great option if you have little ones who want to spend their days running in the sun. This added protection can do the world of good as children's skin is a lot more delicate than adults'.

In fact, repeated sunburns during childhood can significantly increase a person's risk of developing skin cancer in later life. So children's clothing with UV protection is a great choice in summer!
