1.MOTHER INDIA

The epic social drama starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar got shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958. Directed by Mehboob Khan, is a story of an idealistic Indian woman who kills his criminal son. The social message remains significant till date.

 

 

2. MUGHAL-E-AZAM

This love saga became a milestone in the bollywood history. The story of Mughal prince Salim who falls in love with a court dancer Anarkali, was an instant hit in with the audience. Its still known as one of the best creations of bollywood. It was the most expensive Indian films of that time.

 

 

3. GUIDE

Guide was one of the best films of Dev Anand. Based on Indian writer R.K. Narayan’s novel, Guide was a critically acclaimed film and screened in Cannes, 42 years later after its realease, in 2007.

 

 

4. SHOLAY

Sholay became the highest grossing film of all times. The film gave us some iconic dialogues and characters, which will remain in our hearts for ages. We all want the friendship like Jai and Veeru.

 

 

5. QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK

This modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s novel ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Qayamat se Qayamat tak hit the right cords with the audience. The newcomers Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla became overnight stars with the film.

 

 

6. HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN

Family films took cinema by storm throughout the nineties. With Sooraj Barjatya casted, the hit pair Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in this family drama and was a huge hit with the audience. The evergreen music also added to the charms of the film.

 

 

7. DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE

Obviously, who can forget DDLJ? “Bade bade desho mein aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain, Senorita!” and we all fell for Shah Rukh Khan at this moment, right? DDLJ rewrote the rules of love with melodious music and beautiful European set up. The film received 10 awards at the Filmfare in 1996.

 

 

8. DIL CHAHTA HAI

The newbie director Farhan Akhtar changed the way of movie writing and gave the best movie of all time. It came as a refreshing take on friendship and the youth could relate to it in many ways. After watching the film, we all were tempted to go on our Goa trip with friends, agree?

 

 

9. LAGAAN

Lagaan got nominated for the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. No one thought cricket and bollywood can be mingled and a masterpiece would be created. Breathtaking performances of every actor left a lasting impression on the audience.

 

 

10. QUEEN

This is the finest performance of Kangana Ranaut. Queen came as a revelation that women can live their life their way without depending on any man. Queen is delight to watch and conveys a strong message. (This one is my personal favorite!)
