4 Reasons Why Fashion Designers Are Moving Towards Sustainability

Raising awareness about the environment and climate change has never been more important. There are so many factors and so many issues that plague the world today. And it is leading the world towards rising sea levels and global temperatures.

But it's not all bad news. There are many ways that people are fighting such issues. And when it comes to the fashion, textile, and garments industries, many companies have taken big steps toward making sure that they affect the environment as little as possible. The focus of this blog will be on fashion designers and why they are moving towards adopting sustainable practices and techniques to not only ensure the longevity of their business but the environment as a whole.

Art Mill is one of those manufacturers that is dedicated to making production and manufacturing practices as sustainable as possible. We help fashion designers in Karachi and, in fact, all over Pakistan refine and improve their manufacturing, ensuring a better tomorrow. Here are four reasons why sustainability is so important in an industry like fashion design.

Sustainability In Fashion Designing – Why It Matters

What Is Meant By Sustainability?

With the word being used so much, what does it actually mean in this context? In the simplest way, it is the utilization of practices and techniques that impact the environment as little as possible and reduce the overall carbon footprint by eliminating waste and using more efficient methods.

 Saves Natural Resources

Of all the clothes being manufactured these days, about 69% of those are made from synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers are everywhere, from the belts that people put in their jeans to the jackets that they wear. But, with everything, there is a cost. Synthetic fibers are created by using oil and other materials. This process puts a strain on the supply of these materials.

But many global fashion brands have begun moving away from this process and towards recyclable materials. Recyclable fibers are much easier to utilize, and they put less pressure on the natural resources being produced every day.

 Reduces Your Carbon Footprint

It is well0known that all kinds of industries emit their fair share of greenhouse gases per year. That is one of the main driving factors in the worsening situation of global warming. As mentioned, oil is one of the main components used in the production of fibers. The carbon footprint of some industries is massive.

Luckily, the fashion industry has become quickly conscious of this. And so, the process of phasing out fast fashion and adopting more environment-friendly practices has become much more common. There are brands that many fashion designing brands out there that portray themselves as the leaders in low carbon emissions.

 Requires Less Water

Water is essential in all kinds of ways. And it is the same for this industry. It is a significant part of the manufacturing process, factoring heavily during the dyeing and finishing process. It is even used in the initial garment production process.

It might surprise some to know that, overall, it takes almost 3000 litres of water to create one t-shirt. Just one. In fact, some materials use water more, such as cotton.

But the industry is reducing its dependency on cotton instead of moving onto its organic counterpart, which reduces water consumption by over 91%. But this process is taking some time, as only a small percentage of all cotton products are made of organic cotton.

 Healthier For People & Planet

Fast fashion is one of the more harmful things to the environment. Fast fashion products are created through a long and arduous process. And thousands of chemicals are used to produce said clothes. But fast fashion clothes are only used for a short time. From the runway to the rack to being discarded, fast fashion has a short shelf-life.

These harmful effects have been recognized, and fashion brands are focusing more and more on creating long-lasting clothes that people would love to keep for a long time.

To Wrap Up

Sustainability is the big aim of the fashion designing world. And, moving forward, it is what will attract the most people to what brands do.

Art Mill also adheres to sustainable practices. From a sportswear designer to a dress designer in Karachi, we keep things as environmentally friendly as possible. Contact us about your fashion brand’s project if you are interested.
