History Of Robot Vacuum Cleaners

There is no doubt that robot vacuum cleaners have been one of the great inventions of this century. In fact, they are replacing a large part of the cleaning tools that we currently have and although it may not seem like it, the invention of robots is not something of the moment. Similar devices already existed years ago.

Fast forward to 1969, when a Japanese magazine features an automatic floor cleaner. A proof of what would come a few years later, in 1978, when the Chiritorie device was born.

Yes, it was a cleaning robot, at that time self-propelled thanks to the wireless remote control that it included in its body. There was also an axis by which he could turn or walk in a straight line along a certain surface. Cleaning was done by suction.

In 1981 the ComRo I was born, a robot that worked thanks to a remote control or with a computer that could be programmed, and that was inserted in the head of the device. It also had an integrated vacuum cleaner, a cordless phone, a digital clock, a black and white screen and an arm that could manipulate objects and lift up to 5 kg of weight.

From then until the relative present there have been several robot vacuum cleaners, such as the Tomy Dustbot, the well-known Panasonic robot vacuum cleaner, the Floor Bot, or the Televac.

It was in 2002 when iRobot put the well-known Roomba on sale, a robot vacuum cleaner with several basic sensors that helped carry out cleaning tasks. It already had the features that we can see today, such as the change of direction, the detection of obstacles, the detection of dirty spots on the ground, or the possibility of "seeing" falls. It also used two wheels, which operated independently, in order to execute 360-degree turns.

There is no doubt that it was the   best-selling robot vacuum cleaner in the world. In fact, since it was put up for sale it has evolved in different ways, including technological advances, the implementation of new parts and the development of applications with which it is possible to control it.

Manufacturers, however, continue to work and progress their automatic cleaning devices, in addition to launching new models. In any case, the main characteristics of these robots are:  great suction power and autonomy.

Robot vacuum cleaner have gone through several generations, although it is necessary to indicate that the basic function of cleaning the home remains the same, what does improve over the years is the technology that allows this task to be carried out in less time and more efficiently.
