How to Roller Skate: 5 Tips for Beginners

Did you know that the first recorded use of a roller skate was way back in 1743? Since then, skating has become an iconic popular culture pastime. But do you know how to get started?

This hobby can improve health and is a lot of fun. Read on as we give our tips on how to roller skate.

1. Get the Right Skates

This is not so much the type of skates you choose, but more about getting ones that fit correctly. If you don't have correctly fitting roller skate gear, or it is loose, it can hinder movement. Make sure you get the right size and try them on before you buy.

Once you have them, make sure you know how to fasten them. Tighten your laces by working from the lowest cross in the lacing pattern. Then pull the next lace and work up towards the top.

There is a lot of help and advice online about getting the right skates.  Check out Rollerskatedad.com for extra assistance.

2. Start Slowly

Roller skating for beginners needs to be done slowly and gradually. Each pair of boots has its own center of gravity and feel. Try doing some easy roller skate moves at home on a soft surface like a carpet or rug before venturing out.

3. Practice Falling

Falling is inevitable when you are starting. If you are tensely waiting for it, the rigid body can make the impact worse. When you practice falling, you can learn to protect yourself and stay loose.

Put on your knee pads and kneel on the ground. Do a small jump, so your pads clatter on the floor. You will also get used to falling forward, which is better than going onto your backside.

Stand up, then do one or two falls onto a soft surface. Aim to land on the knee pads, with your hands out in front of you.

4. Get a Standing Posture

Many newcomers tend to fall over when they are standing still. There are two positions you can use to prevent this. The best for beginners is the T-position which involves placing the heel of one foot into the instep of another.

5. How to Roller Skate

When you are ready to skate, put your feet parallel, one hand's width apart. Bend your knees until you feel the weight on the balls of your feet. Your shins should touch and be supported by the top ankle straps.

When you have this position, you will have more control. Your weight will help propel you forward, and if you fall it will always be onto your knees. Push yourself off and you will be skating!

Get Started!

Now you know the basics of how to roller skate, strap them on, and get going! Pick a place to do some small moves, make sure you wear safety gear, and start slowly. As you get more confident you can pick up the pace.
