IELTS Test – How Does It Work?

The language proficiency test is one of the most important elements when studying, working or immigrating to Canada. However, do you know what IELTS is and how it works?

IELTS stands for "International English Language Testing System" and is one of the available tests that demonstrate your command of the English language. The test costs around $320 CAD, is available 48 times a year and 1,600 locations worldwide. Depending on the reason, the person who needs to prove knowledge in English must choose between two types of proof: academic or general.

TEST FORMAT

The test assesses your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. The total test time is 3 hours. Listening, reading, writing is completed on the same day, without breaks. The 15 minutes of speaking can be presented a day before or after the other modules.

In academic or general IELTS, the speaking and listening modules are the same, but the reading and writing modules are different and more focused on the type of exam.

PRESENTATION OF THE TEST IN A PHYSICAL OR ELECTRONIC MEANS

IELTS can be done on paper or on a computer. The questions of the exam through computer and on paper are exactly the same; however, there are some differences in testing between the two formats.

Dates for the test: The electronic version offers more application possibilities than the paper version due to the ease of application and correction of the exams.

Response time: The electronic version takes 5 to 7 days to send the result. The paper version takes 10-15 days.

Speaking: it is exactly the same on a computer or on paper, it is face-to-face and the questions are asked by a person.

Listening - The computerized version will always have a headset where you can adjust the audio volume and focus your attention, making your notes on the support sheet while you complete the answers. In the paper version, there will not always be headphones available in the room structure (just a common loudspeaker), but you can take notes directly on the question sheet, circle and shout and have a few minutes at the end to transfer your answers to the Answers paper.

Reading – The paper version makes you need to turn the pages to access the text and questions, but in return, it makes it easier for you to lay out, in a circle, writing things in the middle of the text on the same paper. On the computer, the screen will be divided in 2: the text will be on the left side and the questions on the right side, both with the scroll bar. Your notes can be made on the extra sheet of paper.

Writing: on the computer there is the possibility of quickly cutting, pasting, deleting, rewriting and rearranging the text. Also, there is the automatic word counter and there is no spelling/grammar correction. In the paper version, you can rearrange the text, since you can write with a pencil and you can erase if necessary, but you will spend much more time rewriting. Additionally, you have to worry about your handwriting.

QUALIFICATION

In an exam like IELTS there is no "pass the test" or no score, because your score reflects the level of English you have. The minimum IELTS score is 1 and the maximum is 9.

ACADEMIC MODULE

Many educational institutions in Canada, mainly public schools, require an official certificate, such as the Academic IELTS or TOEFL score, which allows you to check the student's level of English during the university admission process and before issuing the Letter of Acceptance (LOA). Each institution requires a specific level of English for the courses it offers.

GENERAL MODULE

To work and immigrate to Canada, IELTS General Training is one of the most sought-after options, in addition to the CELPIP test. The minimum level depends on the process to which it applies. To find out the equivalence of the general IELTS scores with the average level of English established by the Canadian government.
