Many people worry about setting their lawns on fire and not being able to contain the flame. If the proper precautions are taken, a fire pit can be put in the lawn.

These precautions also depend on the type of fire pit you want to add to your garden. Are you looking for a more permanent one that doesn't move or a more portable temporary fire pit?

Temporary and more portable patio fireplace

Obviously, if you're looking to use a portable fireplace, it's most likely a temporary one where you don't want to ruin your lawn. If this is the case, you have a few options you can use to help protect your lawn so you can keep it green the next day after a fire.

Elevated portable fire pit

This would be an ideal fire pit as it would keep the actual fire off the ground with air moving between the pit and the grass. These are designed to allow fires to be built virtually anywhere relatively safely. If you choose one of these possibilities, it is fine to use it.

However, there are also a couple of precautions you can take to make sure your garden is not damaged. First of all, before starting the fire, you can simply get a garden hose and get the lawn wet. This will help protect it for the duration of the fire.

Another option is to pick up some brick pavers. These are quite inexpensive and can be found everywhere. Before lighting the fire, simply place a single layer between the fire pit and the grass. Brick pavers are quite strong and super heat resistant.

Not only this, but if you put your fire pit in it, you are also raising the heat of the herb even higher. One note though, is sure to remove the brick pavers the next day so you don't drown the garden and end up with a brown stain anyway.

One last option to consider protecting your yard for a fire pit is to choose a fire protection mat that is relatively inexpensive. Most fire rugs have heat retention of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit where they won't crack, tear, or even curl.

They are also low maintenance and easy to clean. They are also a very good thing to consider under the grill as protection against sparks, stains, oil, drips...

Some other safety concerns are to remember to keep your fire pit 20 to 25 feet away from any structure that includes your porch or deck. Do not place directly on grass unless it is soaked with good clearance.

When you have a fire, always have a hose ready to turn on or a fire extinguisher.

Permanent fireplace in the patio

There are many options for placing a permanent fireplace in your garden. This is definitely the safer of the two options as you can design the entire pit to maximize your safety.

One of the safest ways is to simply pour a concrete pad. Once complete, you can take bricks and build a circle around the platform to help contain the fire to the designated area. If poured large enough, the concrete pad will give you a nice solid surface for your lawn chair.

Another option is to get some sand and level the place where you want to put your fireplace. You can then lay brick as your floor. Once complete, simply build your circle on the brick floor to contain the fire.

If you've ever been camping, I'm sure you've seen a ring of fire too. These are also versatile. You can dig a hole in the ground and make them flush with the ground or let them sit on top.

If you put them on the ground, it's much easier to mow your lawn and you don't have to remove weeds to keep it clean. However, if you're playing them on the ground, you'll probably want to lay a few rows of bricks around the circumference to help keep the lawn green.

If you put them on the surface, I recommend getting two rings, one smaller than the other. Center the smaller one inside the larger one and fill it with concrete. This will help keep the heat inside and prevent the grass from catching fire.
