The now familiar, yet still innovative three-pointed star was designed by Adolf Dassler, of the Daimler company, in 1931. The original three black stars all had the same width, representing the first three members of the founding family – August, Karl and Berthold. The three founders hired young, talented designer Erich Heckel to expand the design into a circle, for the new Daimler Benz company.
Heckel was able to further refine the design, adding a square element on the top to symbolize the vertically integrated business of Mercedes-Benz. In 1934 the circle was enclosed, forming the “3” that is recognizable today.

Mercedes’ new campaign is called “The future of ownership.” It’s about “using your imagination to experience the things you love before you’ve even bought them.” The campaign is about “spoiling customers,” according to the company’s head of North American marketing, Steve Cannon. “You can’t always satisfy the customers in reality,” Cannon told Automotive News. “But in imagination, you can.”
