"On a late July afternoon in 2018, James Lawrence Yellow Horse and the Wind River Hotshots from Wyoming are working a lightning fire on Blue Ridge in the Silver Mountain National Forest of northern California. Six fires in the Basin complex have been staffed. Dispatch calls James and tells him to prepare his crew for helicopter pickup by 1800. James refuses, explaining that he and the crew need to stay another night to secure their fire. Dispatch insists. The Type II management team wants all crews to come in, claiming that the country is too steep and too rough for night work. James still refuses. The Incident Commander happens to be Jenny Del Rosa, on her first assignment. James and Jenny, both with strong firefighting backgrounds, are engaged to be married. Thus begins a story that tests their relationship and raises major issues about fire management in this era of climate change, record-low fuel moistures, heavy forest fuel buildup, and some of the biggest and hottest fires on record.
